Mt Emei, south of Chengdu in Sichuan province, is one of the four scared mountains of Chinese Buddhism. Dotted with temples and shrines, the mountain itself is also a nature reserve, rich in forests, flora and wildlife. The Giant Buddha at Leshan, carved into the river cliff, is one of the most imposing sights in western China.

Day 1  Arrive Chengdu. Transfer to hotel.

Day 2   Travel by road two hours from Chengdu to Leshan to see the Giant Buddha, one of the largest Buddha statues in the world, carved from a river cliff overlooking the Min River in the 8th century AD. Travel onward to the foot of Mt Emei, one of the four sacred mountains of Chinese Buddhism.

Day 3  After breakfast, take the cable car up the mountain to the Golden Summit where a temple is perched on the peak of the mountain. If the weather is favourable enjoy fine views over the sea of clouds. Stay at hotel on top of the mountain. (B, L)

Day 4   Today walk down the mountain following the trail through forests and passing temples. End at the Baoguo Temple before the drive back to Chengdu

Day 5  Day free until transfer to airport for exit (B)
