Zhangjiajie landscape

China has a wealth of mountains and forests. This tour includes the Shunan Zhuhai 'bamboo sea' - a remarkable landscape of slender bamboo trees - and Zhangjiajie or Wulingyuan scenic reserve, in the west of Hunan province, a striking area of rocky pinnacles and deep valleys clothed in virgin forest and containing an abundance of fauna and flora.

Day 1  Arrive Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province. Transfer by road to the Shunan Zhuhai bamboo sea near Yibin. Stay at local guesthouse.

Day 2  Day to explore the 'South Sichuan bamboo sea' - a dense covering of tall bamboo that covers some 150sq km of mountain slopes (B)

Day 4  Transfer to road to Chengdu for overnight stay. Rest of the day free to explore Chengdu. (B)

Day 5  City sightseeing in Shanghai, including the Yu Garden, Bund, Xintiandi and a trip by boat on the Huangpu River. (B, L)

Day 6  Transfer to airport for flight to Zhangjiajie, a UNESCO world heritage site. Here the eroding plateau has created a dramatic landscape of rocky pinnacles, gushing streams, waterfalls and dense sub-tropical forest wreathed in mist. Transfer to hotel. (B)

Day 7  Excursion to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, exploring Huangshizhai (Yellow Stone Village) by roundtrip cable car, then walk of about 1km along the Golden Whip Stream before returning to the hotel (B, L)

Day 8  Ascend to Tianzishan by cable car. Tour Helong Park and Yubifeng Peak. Then shuttle bus to the Yuanjiajie scenic spot to see the "Avatar" mountain and No. 1 Bridge before taking the Bailong Elevator (a glass elevator the world's tallest lift) down to explore the Ten Miles Gallery by round trip bus. Day 9  Excursion to Tianmen Mountain by car including the Tianmen Cave and the Glass Skywalk, built into the cliff and hovering over a nearly 1,000ft drop. Transfer to airport for evening flight to Changsha, capital of Hunan province. Transfer to hotel. (B, L)

Day 10  Visit the Mawangdui museum housing the many fascinating objects from a remarkably preserved tomb from the Han dynasty, before transfer to airport for your onward journey. (B)
